This case-control study of 191 Chinese chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) patients and 177 healthy controls examined association of FCER1A SNPs (rs2298805, rs10908703, rs2494262) with disease susceptibility and response to H1-antihistamines. The rs2298805 G allele was associated with higher serum IgE levels (P = 0.011) and the rs2298805 A allele showed reduced frequency in patients unresponsive to antihistamines (OR = 8.328, P = 0.015).

The immunoglobulin epsilon receptor (IgE receptor) is the initiator of the allergic response. When two or more high-affinity IgE receptors are brought together by allergen-bound IgE molecules, mediators such as histamine that are responsible for allergy symptoms are released.
