A genome-wide association study in 706 North Indian rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and 761 controls identified rs255758 in the ARL15 gene on chromosome 5 as a novel non-HLA susceptibility locus (P combined = 6.57 × 10⁻⁶, OR = 1.42). The association was confirmed in an independent replication cohort of 927 RA patients and 1,148 controls, and genotype-phenotype correlation showed that the risk allele was associated with decreased adiponectin levels, suggesting a functional role in RA pathogenesis.
