The G allele encodes a Thr113Ala substitution in the third transmembrane helix of the olfactory receptor OR2J3, impairing its ability to respond to cis-3-hexen-1-ol, the primary green leaf volatile responsible for the smell of freshly cut grass. In a study of 52 participants, carriers of the less sensitive haplotype containing T113A had significantly higher odor detection thresholds for cis-3-hexen-1-ol (p = 9.83 × 10⁻⁵), with the haplotype explaining 26.4% of variation in detection ability.
