Independent evidence for an association between general cognitive ability and a genetic locus for educational attainment
AssociationN=20,495Joey W. Trampush et al.(2015)· American Journal of Medical Genetics Part B: Neuropsychiatric Genetics

A GWAS replication study demonstrating that rs1906252 (6q16.1, in an intron of lincRNA RP11-436D23.1) is independently associated with general cognitive ability (g factor) across 20,495 COGENT participants (beta=0.031, p=1.47×10⁻⁴). The minor A allele was associated with higher cognitive scores; meta-analysis combining COGENT and SSGAC (43,381 samples) yielded p=4.94×10⁻⁷. The locus was previously identified in an educational attainment GWAS, confirming shared genetic architecture between cognitive ability and educational outcomes.
